Mobility & Fall Prevention in Nairobi & Kiambu
Safe help getting up, walking, using a walker or wheelchair, and simple changes around the home that reduce the risk of falls.
Falls are one of the biggest risks for older adults, and a single fall can take away a lot of confidence. Staying active is important — the key is moving safely.
Safe moving and handling
I learned safe moving and handling techniques in training: helping someone stand up from a bed or chair, walk with a stick, walker or frame, move into a wheelchair, and get on and off the toilet — protecting both their body and mine.
Keeping active
With the family's agreement, and following any advice from a doctor or physiotherapist, I encourage short walks around the house or compound and simple everyday movement, because staying active helps strength and balance.
Making the home safer
On a first visit I can point out simple fall risks: loose rugs, poor lighting at night, wet bathroom floors, steps without rails, items on the floor. Small changes — a night light, a non-slip mat, a chair in the shower — can make a big difference.
If a fall happens
I don't rush to lift someone who may be injured. I check for injury, make them comfortable, call for medical help when needed, and inform the family immediately.
