Home Care in Kiambu: A Guide for Families in Ruaka, Ruiru, Thika, Kikuyu and Beyond

How families across Kiambu County can arrange reliable care at home for older parents — visits, live-in care, hospital follow-up and support from abroad.

Kiambu County is home to fast-growing towns like Ruaka, Ruiru, Juja and Kikuyu, and to many family homes in Kiambu Town, Githunguri, Limuru and Thika where older parents have lived for decades. Arranging care here has its own practical questions.

Common situations in Kiambu

  • Parents in the family home on a larger compound, with children working in Nairobi all day or living abroad
  • Older relatives living with working families in Ruaka, Ruiru or Kikuyu, alone from early morning until evening
  • Recovering after hospital — discharged from a Nairobi hospital or a Kiambu facility — and needing help for the first weeks

Choosing the right kind of care

Near Nairobi (Ruaka, Banana, Kiambu Town, Ruiru, Kahawa)

Shorter daily or alternate-day visits can work well — for example a morning visit for washing, breakfast and medicines.

Farther areas (Thika, Juja, Limuru, Githunguri, Gatundu)

Travel time matters. Longer shifts, overnight stays or live-in care are often more practical and better value than short daily visits.

Staying connected when you're far away

  • Agree regular WhatsApp updates after each visit
  • Keep a local relative, neighbour or church member involved
  • Schedule video calls with your parent
  • Pay the caregiver directly by M-Pesa or bank transfer, never through your parent's cash or cards

Appointments and hospitals

Many Kiambu residents use both Nairobi hospitals and Kiambu facilities. A caregiver can accompany your parent, note what the doctor says, help collect prescriptions, and send you a summary the same day.

Checking who you hire

Wherever you are, the same safety steps apply: meet in person, check original certificates and a Certificate of Good Conduct, call references, and agree everything in writing. Read the full checklist.
